This data is combined from all states in the US. There have been 873 total deaths that have been recorded since 1998 due to this one problem. These deaths mostly occur during the warmer summer months, but a small percentage of them have taken place during more moderate temperatures.

Causes of Hot Car Deaths

21% of deaths: occur because children are knowingly left in the car

54% of deaths: occur because children are forgotten in the car

25% of deaths: occur because children gained access to a car without their parent knowing
